VIVAnews - Bank Indonesia unexpectedly cuts its benchmark rate by 50 basis points, setting the Bank Indonesia (BI) Rate at 6 percent. BI said the slash was due to the low inflation, nearing 4 percent up to late 2011.

"The cut in the BI Rate is a result of the decreasing inflation," said Chief of BI Public Relations Division, Difi A. Johansyah, today.

Overall, he said the economic growth hits 6.5 percent. Industry, trade, hotel, transportation, and communication are figured to have been supporting the economy.

The BI Rate cut is expected to gain ground of interest rate structures.

On the other hand, foreign exchange reserves in late October 2011 reached US$114 billion, an equal of 6.6 months of imports and foreign debt repayment.
