Four Somali Pirates Die during Gunshots

VIVAnews - The Indonesian Military engaged in gunshots with Somali pirates aboard Sinar Kudus ship as an operation to release hostages was taking place. Four Somali pirates died during the clash.

"The operation was set out after all hostages were considered safe at 5.10 PM local time," said Spokesperson of the Indonesian Military, Rear Admiral Iskandar Sitompul, on Monday.

As soon as the hostages were rescued, the pirates, estimated to be around 35 in number, left the ship.

"There were four final pirates stepping down the ship and took a speed boat to escape. They were chased [by the military personnel] and became targets of shooting," he said.

The last four pirates were declared dead. "None of our personnel dies," he said.

MV Sinar Kudus is and Indonesian ship owned by PT Samudera Indonesia. Somali pirates took over the ship for 46 days, taking some 20 ship crews as hostages. The pirates decided to let go of all hostages after their ransom demand was approved.
