New Anti-terror Task Force Formed

VIVAnews - Attorney General Hendarman Supanji inaugurated an anti-terror task force at the Attorney General's Office (AGO) on Friday, Jan 16. The anti-terror task consists of 28 prosecutors selected from Special Crimes Solicitor Generals, the High District Attorney's Office of Jakarta, the District Attorney's Office of Central Jakarta, the District Attorney's Office of South Jakarta, and the Buntok Attorney's Office in Central Kalimantan.

Based on a document of Indonesian Attorney General's Decision No. 146/A/JA/11/2008, it is stipulated that the inauguration is based on a letter dated 18 September 2008 which was sent by the US Embassy in Indonesia regarding "Task renewal agreement on anti-terrorism and transnational crimes," as VIVAnews quoted from Attorney General's Decree.

After the United States Embassy issued the letter, Attorney General Hendarman Supanji then issued Attorney General's Regulation No.8/2005 on Terrorism Handling and Transnational Crimes Task Force Establishment, Organizational Structure and Excuting Personnel. "The fund will be from AGO's budget or donation," the Attorney General's Decree stated.

The inauguration was also attended by the representatives of Australia, the United States, and Special Detachment 88. AGO had probed into several cases of terrorism. The Bali Bombing I perpetrators Amrozi, Imam Samudra and Ali Ghufron was executed by a firing squad on 9 November 2008.

According to information gathered by VIVAnews the founding of the anti-terror task force was donated by the United States and Australia. In September 2005, the US Government granted a fund of about US$750,000 to support AGO fight various transnational crimes including terrorism, cyber-crime, money laundering and human trafficking.

The aid was handed over on 12 September 2005 by the US Ambassador B. Lynn Pascoe, which was received by former Attorney General Abdul Rahman Saleh.

Initially there were protests against the task force founding. Chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR) Agung Laksono was worried that foreigners are intervening in the Indonesian law enforcers. However, the AGO denies the existence of any bargaining in the forming of the task force.
