VIVAnews - The Jakarta government is expected to improve its service by providing public transportation 24/7 in anticipation of growing rates of crime against women who rarely find safe transport until late at night.

A criminologist at the University of Indonesia, Adrianus Meliala, described the situation saying that the current transport in Jakarta is less secure to women passengers.

"They (women) help drive the economy even though they are close to danger. But this city never sleeps and the government also enjoys the tax revenues from entertainment venues," Adrian told VIVAnews

Although Transjakarta bus operating hour extends to 11 p.m., it is still deemed inadequate.

"Jakarta’s transport is not very friendly to women. Working at night is risky, and they are very close to the bad guys. But finding a job is not easy," he said.

Based on data of the Jakarta Regional Police, up to September there have been 40 cases of rape. Three cases occurred in public transport.

The most horrendous case befell Pavita Soelistyo Livia, a student of Bina Nusantara University (Binus). In addition to being raped, she was killed by the perpetrators to cover their traces of crime.

Jakarta Police Head of Operating Bureau, Chief Comm. Sujarno said, to anticipate the occurrence of such crimes, the people, especially women who go home from work at night are adviced to choose public transport carefully.

"Don’t hesitate to refuse taking the public transport. See if there are women inside also or not. Do not take the transport where the passengers are all men. We must be aware of it," he said.

Sujarno asked the victims of harassment to file a report to the police. That way, the culprits could be prosecuted. "The general public must not hesitate to file a report. The prosecution is secretive, the trial is a closed one," said Sujarno.
