VIVAnews - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) plans to build Disaster Alert Information System in Solok, West Sumatra. Five districts in Solok will have WebGIS-based information system that can be accessed through the Internet installed. The five districts will be the pilot model of the national-scaled disaster information system.

According to BNPB Head of Data and Information, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, Solok is singled out as the regency is rated as having strong database of disaster information. "We have selected two regions in Indonesia for pilot projects of which Solok is one of them," said Sutopo in Padang, Monday.

According to Sutopo, the five districts in Solok will install alert information system (SIGAP) which displays the area profiles, disaster management resources and areas that may be referred to as evacuation sites. The five districts in Solok include Kubung, Lembah Jaya, Lembang Gumanti and Danau Kembar districts.

Solok is the most prepared area in terms of data source. The five districts have had comprehensive area maps. "It would need around Rp500 million to create such a map. Due to limited funds, we can only do this," said Sutopo.

Alluding to the dire disaster management in regions, according to Sutopo, the problem rose because of the lack of technical and human resources. "Head of BPBD, according to the Act, should be one of those professionals. Because of regional autonomy, the BPBD head is often rotated," he said.
