VIVAnews - National Police spokesperson, Ins. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution, said police are probing into allegation saying that a retired general had been involved in the Orangutan massacre in Kalimantan at the oil palm plantation owned by PT Khaleda Agroprima Malindo.

Saud said the police investigation team is still seeking evidence to reveal whether or not Khaleda Agroprima is associated with the slaying. Agroprima is a affiliated with a Malaysia-based company.

A director of Agroprima is said as a retired police general. "We'll see what the investigation team will find," said Saud.

The Kalimantan orangutan massacre was exposed by the Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP). According to COP, a company deliberately rewarded anyone who managed to kill orangutan that approached the plantation land by between Rp500 thousand and Rp1 million.

COP said they found orangutan bones near the plantation area. In addition, carcasses of the slayed orangutan were still hung on the trees. COP believed the torture against orangutan has taken place since 2008.
COP has submitted reports on the findings to the government and was not seriously responded.

Indonesia is home to 90 percent of orangutan population worldwide. Around 50 thousand of orangutan live in the country's thick tropical forests. However, massive illegal logging aiming at planting land with oil palm has ruined orangutan natural habitat.
