ENI Soon to Develop Ambalat Oil Field

VIVAnews - An Italy-based oil and gas company, ENI, will work on the Aster oil field near the Ambalat border.

The director general for Oil and Gas of the Energy and Mineral Resources Department Evita Herawati Legowo said that the field is potential for boosting domestic oil production to 30-40,000 barrels per day.

"This is an early indication, in the next two or three months we'll have the first test," said Legowo from her office in Jakarta on Friday, 17 April.

However, ENI and the Energy Department are going to take careful measures in the development process considering the field location which is at the border between Indonesia and Malaysia.

The Energy Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro explained that in order to smooth the oil exploration and production process in the field, the government has requested an aid from the Indonesia Military (TNI) to secure the block. "We've coordinated with TNI," he added.

Yusgiantoro also mentioned that Malaysia had proposed a cooperation with the Indonesia's government to develop the block, but the government rejected it. The reason was that the oil reserve is in Indonesian territory.
