VIVAnews - A research conducted by the Health Agency of Padang Panjang city, West Sumatra, shows that 66 percent of early smokers in Indonesia started smoking after seeing cigarette advertisements.
Therefore, Padang Panjang Mayor, Suirsyam, stated that city administrations anywhere in the archipelago must dare challenge cigarette advertisements or sponsors.
"This is certainly un unfortunate fact," said Suirsyam in Padang yesterday, May 30. "Not to mention 43 millions of Indonesian children who live under the same roof with smokers and are exposed to cigarette smoke," he said. Padang Panjang is hosting the 2010 World No Tobbaco Day which is celebrated today.
Based on a research organized by the 2006 Global Youth Tobacco Survey, 64.2 percent of school children are recorded as having been exposed to cigarette smoke while they are at homes. The research concluded that 37.3 percent of students smoke and three out of 10 students begin smoking when they are 10 years of age.
Suirsyam also said that the high number of smokers in the country has caused Indonesia to be listed as top three regarding highest tobacco consumption worldwide with 220 billions of cigarettes puffed per year.
A member of the National Commission for Child Protection, Lisda Sundari, said the efforts to prevent children from smoking should be initiated by their parents.
