Jokowi, G7 Leaders Pay Respect to Atomic Bomb Victims in Hiroshima

VIVA – The Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), accompanied by the first lady, Iriana Jokowi visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on Sunday. The visit was part of the G7 Outreach Summit program. 

The President and other state leaders signed the guest book, and then together with other leaders walked to the memorial monument or 'cenotaph'.

In front of the monument, the President and the leaders then conducted a wreath-laying ceremony and pay respect to the victims of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima.

Also, the Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stood alongside other leaders and observed a moment of silence in front of the cenotaph at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. After a tour in the park, the leaders gathered to participate in a tree planting ceremony.

On a separate occasion, Mrs. Iriana Iriana along with Mrs. Yuko Kishida and the accompanying leaders of the G7 partner countries, also conducted a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument and paid tribute to the victims of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima.

As information, the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, during World War II. The attack resulted in the complete devastation of Hiroshima, causing massive destruction and loss of life. It is estimated that around 140,000 people died as a direct result of the explosion and its immediate aftermath, including the effects of radiation sickness.

The bombing of Hiroshima played a significant role in Japan's decision to surrender, ultimately leading to the end of World War II.
