The social aid included in the retrieval program of Jakarta Elementary Education Program will be effective in 2009. The allocated fund is up to Rp 689 million (approx. US$57,350). "Today, countless street children are dropping out of schools," said Agus Bambang, Head of Junior High Education Sub-Agency at Jakarta Elementary Education Agency.

Every street child studying at elementary school will receive aid amounting to Rp 750 thousand (approx. US$62) per year. Those who are in Junior High will receive Rp 1 million (approx. US$83). The fund will be disbursed directly to school accounts.

Data of Jakarta Elementary Education Agency shows that the total number of street children studying in Elementary and Junior High School is 600. "Whether or not the problem is with people themselves is not the issue. What's important is how the implementation is evaluated," said member of E Commission on education division at Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) M Thamrin, today, Nov 21.

Similar program has been implemented by the Department of National Education in the previous years. However, the program was stopped without clear reason.
