VIVAnews - The third phase of New7Wonders of Nature selection process has commenced. Komodo Island, Indonesia’s only representative, has made it into the top 14 of a total of 28 finalists.

Komodo Island has successfully passed the previous phases. The first phase took place from December 2007 to July 7, 2009 to choose 77 nominees, which will be narrowed down to 28 finalists on July 21, 2010.

The remaining finalists will then be competing for votes from countries throughout the world to get a spot in the list of seven wonders. The announcement of the winners will be made on November 11, 2011.

Indonesia’s Komodo Island features its world-renowned populations, Komodo Dragons, which are believed to be the last dinosaurs on earth.

Komodo National Park that consists of Komodo Island, Rinca and Padar and whole other 1,817 square-meter area of islands is Komodos’ natural habitat. Established in 1980, the park is not only home of the giant lizards, but also other kinds of animals, including sea creatures.

People all over the globe can choose which sites deserve the title of new wonders of nature by visiting www.new7wonders.com. New7Wonders Project Founder Bernard Weber said the total of 1 billion world population is expected to cast their votes.

As published by New7Wonders’ official website on Tuesday, June 29, 2010, Komodo Island is included in the top 14 alongside the Amazon River,  the Dead Sea, Grand Canyon, Halong Bay, Jeita Grotto, Puerto Princesa, Angel Fallas, Galapagos, Great Barrier Reef, Iguazu Falls, Jeju Island, Maldives and Vesuvius.
