VIVAnews – Indonesia’s rank of Global Competitiveness Index (CGI) of 2010 went up from 54th to 44th out of 139 countries. Indonesia is the highest climber among G20 countries, surpassing Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa.
In Thierry Geiger’s report, The Indonesia Competitiveness Report 2011, Indonesia’s rank is higher than that of Brazil (59th), Russia (63rd), India (51st) and South Africa (54th). However, Indonesia’s position is still below China (27th) , Singapore (3rd) and Malaysia (26th).
Thierry, who is also a World Economic Forum economist, said that Indonesia’s strengths are rapid economic growth and good fiscal management. Well-distributed access to primary education also increased qualities.
The report also mentions several important factors for several years ahead, including commodity market efficiency due to competitive tax policy. However, the issues of bureaucracy and trade impediments were still there. Indonesia also excels because of its vast market.
As one of 20 nations of largest economy, Indonesia excels due to its high population and the growth of the middle class.
According to Thierry, Indonesia’s most obvious drawback is the infrastructure sector. The conditions of ports, high ways and railways are still regarded as poor.
In addition, electric supply is still unreliable and scarce, information technology absorption is still low and manpower issue is still difficult.
Thierry also focused on spreading corruption, which requires more transparent policy-making processes. “In the end Indonesia must still strengthening its institutional framework,” he said.
The report also acknowledges that Indonesia underwent a good change and was proven being resilient to the global crisis. “This is a positive change. But, Indonesia mustn’t be complacent,” he said.
CGI is calculated based on 12 indicators, among others, institutions, infrastructure, macro economic environment, primary education as well as higher education and training.
Other indicators are goods market efficiency, labor market efficiency, financial market development, technology readiness, market size, business sophistication and innovation.
