VIVAnews – Sriwijaya Air’s Boeing 737-300 skidded off the runway on Tuesday, Dec 2011, at Adi Sucipto Airport, Yogyakarta. The incident has resulted in cancelled flights for more than 1,000 passengers. The airport was shut down last night.
As reported by Ike Oktaviari, a Lion Air’s passenger, her plane was supposed to depart to Jakarta at 5.45 p.m yesterday but was cancelled as the airport was closed.
Ike had already checked her luggage in. “But until 10 p.m., I was still standing in line to retrieve my luggage,” she said.
The same issue affected Brigita Dona, a Sriwijaya Air’s passenger. She had already been ready for departure at 1 p.m to Balikpapan yesterday.
“I got here around 1 p.m. My flight was supposed to leave at 2 p.m, but it was delayed until 10 a.m this morning,” she said.
She said that the airline provided hotel accommodations.
Agus Tugiarto, the Operational Manager of PT Angkasa Pura I Adi Sucipto Airport, said that because of the shutdown last night, there were four flights that got cancelled, namely: Garuda, Lion Air, Air Asia and Sriwijaya. More than 1,000 passengers failed to fly.
“This morning, we made sure that the airport is re-opened. The troubled Sriwijaya Air aircraft has been moved to the farthest side of the airport, so it should not disturb the runway activities,” Agus said.
The airplane flying from Surabaya to Yogyakarta skidded off the runway upon landing. Two of its wheels broke. There were no casualties in the incident.
However, five passengers are injured and suffered from trauma.
