VIVA – President Joko Widodo warmly welcomes the arrival of FIFA’s President, Gianni Infantino at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta on Tuesday, October 18, 2022.
Gianni Infantino arrived at 11.58 pm local time and was first greeted by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Zainudin Amali, and the Minister of SOEs Erick Thohir at the Merdeka Palace. Then, met the Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
The high-ranking world football authority then met with President Jokowi in the Jepara Room, Merdeka Palace. Infantino's arrival to Indonesia is a follow-up to his letter to President Joko Widodo which was delivered through Erick Thohir regarding the big plan for the transformation of Indonesian football after the Kanjuruhan Tragedy.
The letter contained FIFA's readiness to cooperate with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the Indonesian government, and PSSI in transforming Indonesian football with five main points.

First, stadium safety and security standards must be comprehensively reviewed and improved. Second, police security protocols and procedures in carrying out match security duties must comply with international safety standards.
Third, more intensive socialization, including the active involvement of supporters in the transformation of football in Indonesia. Fourth, the scheduling of matches must be reviewed, including with a specific purpose to avoid execution time that can increase risk.
Then, fifth, mentoring and benchmarking, which requires that institutions and stadium safety and security experts need to be reached to establish a systematic comparison of best practices globally.
The Kanjuruhan tragedy occurred after the Indonesian League 1 match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya at the Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang Regency, East Java, on October 1.
According to the report of the Joint Independent Fact-Finding Team (TGIPF) submitted to President Jokowi on Friday, October 14, 2022, the Kanjuruhan Tragedy resulted in at least 132 fatalities, 96 seriously injured, and 484 others with moderate and minor injuries.
