Indonesia Faces Busy Schedule of Sports Championships in 2023

VIVA – In 2023, Indonesia is preparing for a busy schedule of sports championships as several agendas have been rescheduled to next year because of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Besides the Cambodia SEA Games, Indonesia is also preparing for the Hangzhou Asian Games on September 23 to October 8. The 19th edition of the Asian Games was supposed to be held in September 2022 but the host, China decided to postpone it until next year.

The Indonesian team will take part in the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) which was to take place in 2021 but has been rescheduled for November 17 to 26, 2023 in Bangkok and Chonburi, Thailand. Not only that, but Indonesia will also be busy hosting the ANOC World Beach Games in Bali on August 5 to 12, 2023.

"Next year, (Indonesia) will be busy because in addition to the four multi-events that we will participate in there will also be many qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Paris Olympics," Chairman of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI), Raja Sapta Oktohari said in Jakarta, Friday, December 23, 2022.

Indonesia is getting busier by hosting several single event tournaments next year, including the Indonesia Masters badminton tournament (January 24-29), ISSF Rifle / Pistol Shooting World Cup (January 27-February 7), UCI Track Nations Cup (February 23-26), U-20 World Cup (May 20-June 11), Indonesia Open (June 13-18), FIBA World Cup 2023 (August 25-September 10), and MotoGP (October 13-15).

From the agenda list, Oktohari asked the parent sport to focus more on preparing athletes for the qualifying tournaments that will begin in 2023.

"We must not discriminate against all Olympic sports. All have the opportunity to take part in qualifying tournaments. Starting from now on, KOI will communicate with sports so that the qualification process can be right on target," Oktohari remarked.
