Jakarta – As of November 6, 2023, there are 35 confirmed cases of Monkey Pox in Indonesia. Of these cases, it's also known that most of the confirmed patients have comorbidities such as HIV and Syphilis.

Even so, the Chairperson of the PB IDI Monkey Pox Task Force, dr. Hanny Nilasari revealed that cases of transmission and morbidity or mortality due to monkeypox are fairly low.

"Transmission is lower, complications are less frequent, mortality is smaller, it is mentioned in the literature that the mortality rate related to the current generation of monkeypox is less than 0.1 percent," said Nilasari in a virtual media briefing of PB IDI, on Monday.

Furthermore, Nilasari said that when viewed from the phylogeny of the monkeypox virus, it is almost similar to the smallpox virus.

However, in its development, there are mutations and the ability of the virus to destroy body cells so that clinical manifestations are less frequent, and the mortality rate is also less. Nevertheless, Nilasari continues to raise awareness among the public.

"We must be careful and find out if there are complications. Because patients who are treated are not only immunocompetent, but some patients are immunocompromised, meaning their immune system is low," Nilasari remarked.

She emphasized that the manifestation of complications from Monkeypox can also attack the brain, causing infection in the brain.

"The virus can still cause serious complications. For example, there are some reports of infection of the brain. Attacking patients with HIV but their CD 4 (T cells) are very low so that manifestations or complications can occur in the brain. There is an infection in the brain. That should be a concern, don't take it lightly," she explained.

Not only contagious between men, monkeypox can also be transmitted to women, she continued.

"One hundred percent of these patients (confirmed monkeypox) are male patients. But that doesn't mean it can't be transmitted to women," Nilasari concluded.
