"Because he is a party chairman as well as the Indonesian Vice President," said Tandjung on Thursday, Jan 15, when attending the inauguration of an NGO Masyarakat Maju Indonesia Community, a research organization promoting fine democratic process.

The former Chairman of the House of Representatives will support Kalla if he is nominated as presidential candidate.

However, the decision lies on the party; for Golkar has yet to set up the mechanism to nominate the presidential candidacy.

Tandjung said that Golkar is likely to hold an open presidential candidacy selection process for an internal presidential candidate so that it may fulfill the hopes of all members. Convention or direct nomination are among the possible measures.

Tandjung also supports the party should it wish to conduct a preliminary survey to assess a candidate's popularity.
