He said that one of the reasons of the prolonged traffic jam is the accumulation of vehicles on the streets.  The rise in the number of vehicles is not balanced by the extention of road capacity.

Based on data from Jakarta Traffic Police, the number of daily trips always increases every year. There were 620,702 trips recorded in 2002 and in 2010; the number increased to 791,295 trips.

It is estimated that the figure will rise to 1,148,528 trips in 2020.  The vehicle mileage in Jakarta only averages on 40 km/hour.  This is excluding the traffic areas of 10-20 km/hour.

The number of motor vehicles in Jakarta has reached 13,347,802 units in Jakarta by the end of 2011. This number consisted of 2,541,351 passenger cars, 581,290 cargo vehicles or trucks, 363,710 buses and 9,861,451 motorcycles. The vehicle growth prediction of 2012 is around 10%.

Yakub explained that currently the Traffic Police is reviewing the 3 in 1 policy and continues to push the implementation of Electronic Road Pricing (ERP).
